Ivar Timmer is Professor of Legal Management & Technology and research coordinator of the Legal Tech Lab , which is part of the Centre of Expertise Applied Artificial Intelligence. His areas of interest are the design and redesign of legal services and processes, with a special focus on technology and AI (legal tech) and legal risk management.

He coordinates a multi-year project researching the design of decision support systems for the legal practice of municipalities and provinces. He was the initiator of the Legal Tech Alliance, a cooperation between 12 university of applied sciences law schools centred on legal tech. He was also awarded a Comenius grant for innovating education in legal tech. He teaches courses on legal service design and legal management research in the Legal Management Master's programme. He publishes and speaks regularly about legal management and risk management, legal service design and legal tech. He has provided lectures and training to a large number of legal teams and professionals including those at ING, Eiffel, General Counsel Network Netherlands, the municipalities of Amsterdam, Utrecht, Tilburg and Nieuwegein, Freshfields Law Firm, the Order of Flemish Bars, the Association of Dutch Municipalities, the Association for Legal Quality Assurance, the province of Gelderland, and the Legal Valley Network.

The subject of his doctoral thesis was legal risk management, and he has written various publications for publisher Boom Juridische Uitgevers about data management, legal tech and legal management, as well as various publications about private law for use in legal education.
