Dr. Daniel Friesen is a lecturer and researcher in MRO Engineering at the Aviation Engineering Research Group at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, focusing on simulation, automation, and human-machine systems.

He studied Mechanical and Process Engineering at the Technical University Darmstadt, Germany, with a focus on aviation and MRO. He spent one year at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA, receiving a Graduate Certificate in Aerospace Systems Engineering. From 2017 to 2021 he was an Early Stage Researcher at a EU-funded Marie-Sklodowska-Curie dual PhD appointment between TU Delft, Netherlands, and Politecnico di Milano, Italy. In this time, he investigated novel automation systems for helicopter control and pilot support, combining short-term control-theoretic analyses with investigations of human performance, workload, human-machine interactions and long-term decision making. He graduated with a PhD in Aerospace Engineering in January 2023.

Since 2021, he has been a lecturer and researcher at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. His teaching covers basics of mathematical concepts and programming, data handling and visualization, and aircraft modelling and simulation. His research is focused on innovative inspection methodologies and data-driven decision support systems in the context of aviation maintenance, repair, and overhaul.

His research interest lies in the application of systems engineering to increase the technology readiness level of novel methodologies, human-machine system analysis and development, and the investigation of novel automation developments and implementation, both on a procedural and technological level.
