About Martin van der Esch

Martin van der Esch is a professor of Interdisciplinary Care for Chronic Joint Disorders at the AUAS. He is also a senior researcher at Reade, Center for Rehabilitation and Rheumatology in Amsterdam, in collaboration with Amsterdam UMC, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. He has scientific experience in conducting epidemiological and biomechanical studies.

Martin’s research focuses on conservative, non-pharmacological treatments for musculoskeletal disorders, particularly osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The emphasis is on the role of knee instability in both the onset and progression of osteoarthritis, as well as the associated limitations in activities. Additionally, he focuses on physical activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis who have a high cardiovascular risk.

Martin supervises PhD candidates in the fields of rheumatology, rehabilitation medicine, physiotherapy, and movement sciences.
