About Mirka Janssen
Mirka Janssen is a professor of Physical Activity in and around School at the Academy for Physical Education (ALO). After graduating in 2005, she worked as a specialist teacher in primary and secondary education and as a training teacher in secondary vocational education (Sports and Movement). In 2007, she started as a training teacher at the ALO.
Mirka obtained her Master's degrees in Human Movement Sciences (2008) and Epidemiology (2011) and obtained her PhD in 2014 from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VUmc) with a dissertation on the schoolyard programme PLAYgrounds, which has been further developed and included in the national database of effective interventions. After her PhD, she combined her work as a training teacher with her position as a senior researcher. In 2021, she was appointed professor in Physical Activity in and around School at the AUAS.
The research groups focuses on the changing role of the physical education teacher in the healthy development of children and young people. It works together with partners on the mission to ensure that all children learn to move well, get enough exercise every day and enjoy exercise.
