About Jan Peter van Zandwijk
Jan Peter van Zandwijk is a Professor of Digital Forensics by special appointment at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. He works on the forensic interpretation of digital traces and the evidential value these traces can have for scenarios in criminal cases. In particular, he is interested in what digital traces can reveal about physical activities that have taken place. Examples include step counts, distances, and floor levels recorded by health apps on phones, location data, or heart rate logs from smartwatches.
With the increasing digitalization of society, digital evidence plays an increasingly important role in criminal cases. Through applied, practice-oriented research on the accuracy and evidential value of digital traces, Jan Peter contributes to a solid foundation for interpreting these traces, ensuring they can be effectively used for investigation and evidence in legal proceedings.
Jan Peter obtained his PhD from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 1998 with research on a biomechanical model for vertical jumping. Since 2011, he has been working at the Netherlands Forensic Institute as a forensic scientist in the Digital and Biometric Traces division. In this role, he combines casework in criminal investigations with case-related R&D and knowledge transfer within the criminal justice system.
