Design elements of educational escape rooms
Internal funding
Educational escape rooms (EERs) are “live-action team-based games where players discover clues, solve puzzles, and accomplish tasks in one or more rooms in order to accomplish a specific goal (usually escaping from the room) in a limited time” (Nicholson, 2015, p.1). Despite being widely applied in STEM education, they are marginally used in entrepreneurship education (EE).
In this project, we evaluated design elements for EERs in EE in order to encourage entrepreneurship educators to use EERs. We were particularly concerned with experiential (or action-oriented) EE since EERs are well suited for experiential learning.
We used a research-through-design approach and created an EER based on 11 design elements derived from the literature on social cognitive theory, entrepreneurship competence, and gamification. We created and evaluated the EER in two cycles with two diverse groups of students.
A major output of this project is a comprehensively designed EER that educational professionals can implement in their experiential EE programs.
The project was completed in 2019.
