Design elements of educational escape rooms

Financed internally

Project

Educational escape rooms (EERs) are 'live-action team-based games where players discover clues, solve puzzles, and complete tasks in one or more rooms to achieve a specific goal (usually escaping from the room) within a limited time' (Nicholson, 2015, p.1). Despite their extensive use in STEM education, they are marginally used in entrepreneurship education (EE).

In this project, we evaluated design elements for EERs in EE to encourage entrepreneurship educators to use EERs. We were particularly interested in experiential (or action-oriented) EE because EERs are very suitable for experiential learning.

We used a research-through-design approach and created an EER based on 11 design elements derived from literature on social cognitive theory, entrepreneurship competence, and gamification. We created and evaluated the EER in two cycles with two different groups of students.

A significant output of this project is a comprehensively designed EER that education professionals can implement in their experiential EE programs.

The project was completed in 2019.
