CAMPAIGNS FOR A NEW WORLD: How do we change people's behaviour in campaigns on social issues? For example: how do we change people's behaviour in health issues (healthy eating, smoking) or environmental issues. How do you apply scientific insights about behaviour in your communication?

STRATEGIC ISSUES MANAGEMENT: As a communications tool, strategic issues management is about ongoingly monitoring national and international emerging issues that can affect the policy and strategy of an organization. It’s also about building long-term, trusting relationships with stakeholders such as employees, customers and investors, as well as external public bodies, such as government and non-governmental organizations. Communications students have to adapt the issues and opportunities and develop a well-thought-out strategic issues management communication plan for an organization.

MEDIA MAKERS IN A PLATFORM SOCIETY: In our stone The Platform Society we research the impact of platforms, both on individuals and society as a whole. Students perform critical research on a specific platform and produce a podcast which shows the impact of the platform on individuals and society. Secondly, the students do research on their own online identity (data selfie) and perform an experiment in collecting private data (f. ex. on health, spending, watching Netflix, etc) and sharing this (or not) with fellow students, making them more aware of the privacy concerns involved with data. On this personal data experiment they write an article, including a data visualisation.

THE FUTURE IS (Y)OURS: In this stepping stone, you will study changes in the current zeitgeist and what they might mean for near or distant futures. You will do this by asking questions, examining other perspectives and exploring the world. How will we deal with future pandemics? Has the world become more inclusive and do we still believe in our democracy? Or what trends are we seeing in digitalisation? All these changes are interrelated - you may develop a story based on the insights you gain. You will not develop into a clairvoyant, but you will make yourself 'future literate'.

DESIGN THE FUTURE: In this stepping stone, you will learn to develop an innovative media concept that will turn the world upside down. You will devise innovative solutions based on new technology and design corresponding business models. New technology and innovation go hand-in-hand with social discussions and ethical issues. You will explore these in-depth as well so that you can tell the story of the future in a distinctive, critical, and impactful manner.

AGENCY: BRIEFING TO PITCH: Dove’s True Beauty, Spotify Wrapped and Nike’s Just do it – are the result of an intense collaboration between brands and their agency. At creative agencies account managers, strategists and concept creatives are building towards creative brands. In this 10-week stone our students are these specialists and run through the entire process from briefing to pitch. The client brief with a communication challenge is the kick-off. The students will do research to gain insights on the client’s problem. Based on solid insights a strategy and big idea is made. This integrated campaign will be pitched by students to the client.

STORYTELLING: BRAND STORIES WITH IMPACT: Great brands need great stories. Consumers choose a brand because of this story. What is the core of a brand and how do you convey that core through a story to your target audience with the aim of influencing their brand preference? Every existing brand has the potential to tell a story, a brand story. After filling your backpack with the Storytelling Stone, you will be able to create, adjust or optimize a brand positioning, and then translate this into a clear and creative brand story. You will learn how to design and tell a good story (with a multimedia way of thinking), including inventing and creating a good concept and a creative process.

THE POWER OF PLATFORMS: In this stepping stone, you will become someone who knows the ins and outs of today's platform economy. You will research the economic and social developments of the future, including the platform economy, and you will learn how to devise a valuable and meaningful media or platform concept on that basis. You will not shy away from complex issues and you will be familiar with the different growth phases of international markets. You will either bring your own client or work on your own media concept. You will independently tackle the problem that you aim to solve through the platform economy. The result of your research will be your own concept with a revenue model. During this process, you will develop your entrepreneurial skills and gain insight into the future of the platform economy.

CREATION WITH INNOVATION: In this stepping stone, you get to explore these kinds of creative ideas. You will learn how you can influence people with new technology. What technologies are there, what data can you use and how do you do so responsibly? That technology is certainly not only used in apps. There is a different concept for every problem. In this stepping stone, you will discover how to devise such a concept, while also considering what really appeals to the target group and how to reach them. Together with several other students, you will work on an assignment to find a new wearable digital solution to a Dutch client's problem: getting adolescents to live healthier lives. Which wearables could you use to get young people to exercise more, eat a healthier diet, or 'keep them going’ mentally? Wearable technology such as smartwatches and sensors provide valuable data that can be used intelligently, but due care must also be exercised. It is up to you to weigh up the considerations.

VALUABLE STORIES: Students design a viable, impactful, and future-proof media solution, based on a validated research cycle and based on knowledge of stories, media, communication, and society, to achieve multiple value creation. In addition, they produce matching stories (media products/services) using storytelling skills and creative techniques.

STORYHACKERS: Humanity as a whole has never had it as good as we have it now. Yet the gap between those who have and those who do not grows wider every day. This contradiction presents us with a huge dilemma: the source of our progress has become the source of our downfall, and existing ways of doing things no longer work. Yet our narratives are still the same: economic growth is essential, heterosexual relationships are the preferred norm, and privacy is dead. These dominant narratives prevent us from making the changes that will enable us to live together sustainably and inclusively, and so we need new stories to effect change. You will create these stories in this challenge. You will work on a range of social issues by identifying dominant narratives, and you will hack them by developing counter-narratives and telling the alternative stories that exist but are never heard. You will use innovative media technologies such as augmented and virtual reality to increase the impact of your stories, choosing the appropriate storytellers and channels to make sure your stories are heard.

EXPEDITION HONEST BRAND: Organisations and brands want to move forward. But society wants to move forward too. The pressure on brands and organisations to unite economic goals with social interests is consequently increasing. This is not only about green, it also concerns social issues. As a brand builder, making a profit is no longer enough and that poses a challenge, because brand promises only work if they are honest. So in this strategic and creative expedition, you will work for a consumer brand/organisation in a complex field of ethical issues, conflicting interests and different actors. Together with other students, you will learn as much as you can about your client to uncover the essence of the brand. You will unravel the outside world - stakeholders, trends and issues - in order to identify opportunities and challenges. You will look for the key to strengthening the brand while also having an impact on people and society. Your advice will be an effective combination of strategy (in the form of organisational advice, brand positioning), design, concept and translation into communication tools.

INNOVATIVE MEDIA CONCEPTS - Cant afford it, not interested, no idea what it is - there are numerous reasons why culture often seems to be for a select few. Could modern technology change that? You are going to ensure that more people can enjoy culture. You will do this using immersive technology (VR or AR). You will work through all the steps required to develop an innovative media concept. You will research your target group through desk research, but you will also talk to them and test your concept. You will devise new functions, make prototypes based on these and develop them into interactive prototypes using such programmes as Adobe XD, Photoshop and Première. In addition, you will develop a communication strategy to reach the target group and rouse their interest in your concept.
