EPIC-WE: advancing youth engagement with cultural heritage through collaboration

9 April 2025

On March 21 and 22, 2024, the EPIC-WE consortium gathered at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) and the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision in Hilversum for an intensive two-day meeting. EPIC-WE is a European project exploring how games and game-making practices can empower young people to actively engage with cultural heritage, while also reinforcing European values. Partners from across Europe came together to share progress, exchange insights, and co-develop plans for the upcoming stages of the project.

Throughout the meeting, participants engaged in a series of presentations and collaborative working sessions. These focused on innovative methods for involving youth in meaningful ways with heritage, and explored how co-creation can help shape new, inclusive narratives. Strategic discussions were held to refine shared approaches and increase the impact of EPIC-WE both locally and across Europe. Informal networking moments allowed partners to deepen their relationships and strengthen collaboration.

The Visual Methodologies research group at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences plays a key role in EPIC-WE’s research component. Drawing from its expertise in visual research methods, the group discussed their recent work on data collection and analysis and how to gain a better understanding of youth participation and the narratives they develop around heritage. This work not only supports the consortium in assessing project impact but also contributes to the development of innovative methods within applied research.

The Hilversum meeting highlighted the importance of cross-border collaboration and the power of creative, visual approaches to give young people a voice in shaping the heritage of the future.
