International student housing

Amsterdam is a great city to live in but its housing is severely limited and expensive. You must start your search for housing as soon as possible. The options available to you are outlined below.

We strongly advise you not to travel to Amsterdam if you have not secured housing before August. We do not recommend to start your studies in a frustrating and stressful position and resorting to hotels or hostels for a long time.

Finding housing on your own

If you are not eligible for nor offered a room by AUAS Housing, you will need to organise your own housing. We'll be honest - it's hard work. However, by starting your search early you can find a room that helps you get the most of Amsterdam and from your studies.

Applying for AUAS housing as an exchange student

If you are coming to Amsterdam as an exchange student, you will automatically receive an email inviting you to apply online for AUAS Housing. This will arrive once your application for an AUAS exchange programme has been approved (in early November for the Spring semester, in early June for the Fall semester). Be aware that availability is limited. About 90% of all exchange students will receive a positive housing lottery result.

Applying for AUAS housing as a Bachelor's or Master's student

Once you have registered for an AUAS degree programme, and you are eligible for housing, you will automatically receive an email in early June inviting you to apply online for AUAS Housing. Be aware that availability is limited. About 50-60% of all international degree students will receive a positive housing lottery result.
