Merunisha Moonilal (MSc; ing.) is a researcher within the research group Fashion Research & Technology of the Knowledge Center FDMCI and conducts research into Sustainability. Her research focuses on extile Ecosystem Circularity: Emerging Technologies as a driver for traceable and transparent Circular ecosystems.

Moonilal is currently working on the research project Transitions, an Erasmus+ project lead by universities, colleges, platforms and other institutes from The Netherlands, Sweden, Italy and Spain that together support the textile and fashion industry in the transition to a more sustainable, circular system.

As an all-around educator for higher education institutes and businesses, in the shifting landscape of sustainability, Moonilal aims to break down complex ideas and present them in a way that is understandable within education and businesses. Thereby bridging the gap between science and industry.

Merunisha Moonilal graduated in 2004 in Technical Commercial Clothing Science. In 2018 she obtained her Master of Science on Sustainable Business and Innovation at the University of Utrecht. After this, Merunisha worked as Sustainability Coordinator & Lecturer for Amsterdam Fashion Institute.

During her 20 years of experience in textiles, Moonilal has acquired an intricate understanding of complex ecosystems from a multi-faceted perspective that includes entrepreneurial as co-founder of Merunisha Moonilal BV and Mer & Moon; industrial for companies like The Cookie Company (Disney, Barbie) and Netraco (ALDI, Hema, C&A), Societal as Country Coordinator India for Fashion Revolution Day; and academic as Docent/Researcher of Sustainability at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam. Her geographically diverse career includes production and manufacturing in the Far East, Africa, Eastern and Southern Europe. Moonilal dedicated her career to navigating sustainability strategies in the textiles industry, developing an embedded knowledge of the level of opacity in multi-tier ecosystems across a multitude of cultures and geographies. Her know-how lies in facilitating businesses to analyse their dynamic capabilities and reallocate resources to push forward circularity in product and processes in their value chains.
