Admission requirements

The Master’s programme Sport Business & Leadership accepts 60 (international) students each year. Due to the limited number of study places, a selection is part of the admission procedure. Read more about the admission requirements on this page.

  • You need to have a Bachelor's degree in sport (HBO level), for example Sportkunde, Sport Studies, or Sport Marketing.
  • You must be proficient in English (understanding, writing, and speaking) at C1 level(opens in new window). This may be demonstrated by presenting a test result. Please note that some candidates may be exempt from this requirement (see 'Exemptions from English language tests' below).

Additional admission requirements

  1. You must demonstrate relevant knowledge and experience through a portfolio which includes your bachelor thesis and CV. We need these documents to check your sport background and experience, knowledge/experience in the Dutch sport sector and the quality of your internships. You do this by submitting a portfolio max. 5 pages (A4): including CV, quality of your internships, summary of thesis/graduation project and recommendations by lecturers and/or employers.
  2. You must demonstrate your motivation to work in the sport industry – proving the potential to be leader. Our programme has a strong reflective component that can only be fulfilled if you understand the specifics of the sport industry ecosystem. You do this by submitting a motivation video (max. 1 minute).

English proficiency

The following language proficiency test results are automatically accepted by our Central Student Administration (CSA):

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): overall band score of at least 92 AND and a minimum score of 21 for each section.
  • IELTS (academic version): overall score of at least 6.5.
  • University of Cambridge, either the University of Cambridge 'Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)', or the University of Cambridge 'Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)', with grades A-C (overall score between 180-199).
  • It may take as long as 6 weeks after taking an IELTS/TOEFL language test for the test centre to issue the results.
  • If the results are not yet available at the time you submit your application package for this Master, you may supply the registration details of the test. You can submit a scan of the registration details of the test when uploading your application package.
  • You must submit your final test results to us before starting the programme at end of August. The admission committee will check the results when they are published on the IELTS or TOEFL website.

In addition to the above-mentioned certificates, the admission committee may consider other proof and certifications (for example university exams and other tests) on a case-by-case basis. Please inquire directly to the admission committee for further information. Email: msbl@hva.nl.

Please note: based on your undergraduate degree, English proficiency and visa status, the timelines of the admission process can differ. We advise you to apply earlier than the application deadline and to upload your documents on time.
