Crowdfunding for Civic Initiatives
1 January 2018 - 1 March 2020

Civic crowdfunding is a new and rapidly growing instrument to finance neighbourhood initiatives. However, many questions remain among area professionals regarding civic crowdfunding. To allow social projects to flourish, they need to quickly assess whether a project can be successful and whether the municipality can play a role. This knowledge is currently lacking. There is too little understanding of which crowdfunding initiatives are successful and how area professionals should approach a municipal organization so that they can act quickly and effectively for residents.
MethodologyĀ
The research focuses on new roles for professionals within municipalities, such as area managers, area brokers, and participation officers. They collaborate with residents, (social) entrepreneurs, and social organizations to explore opportunities for residents' initiatives to flourish.Ā
Link with EducationĀ
The research specifically addresses the question of how area professionals can structure their municipal organization for this form of citizen participation and how they can mobilize knowledge and manpower in areas (civic crowdsourcing). The program creates a knowledge network between the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, the VNG Academy, professionals from over 14 municipalities, and the two main civic crowdfunding platforms in the Netherlands.Ā
