AI and Media: Collaborating for a Stronger Democracy

1 January 2023 - 31 December 2024

The rise of large-scale language models and other AI-driven technologies has raised critical societal questions about the use of artificial intelligence in media. The AI, Media & Democracy Lab explores the impact of AI on the democratic role of media and its potential to foster an inclusive society. The lab is a collaboration between the University of Amsterdam, Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica, and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA).

Since 2022, the lab has operated as an Ethical, Legal, and Societal Aspects (ELSA) Lab, funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO). The goal is to develop and test value-driven, human-centered AI applications while establishing ethical and legal frameworks for the responsible use of AI in media. The lab works closely with journalists, media organizations, designers, researchers, and citizens to create AI innovations that enhance the democratic function of media. By combining practical and theoretical research, the lab anticipates and addresses both current and future challenges.
