The Art of Mediated Dialogue
1 September 2023 - 1 June 2028

Listening to understand or to respond? Mediated conversations are increasingly used as a research method to explore societal challenges. These dialogues create space for diverse perspectives and collective reflection on the future. This project investigates and applies this participatory approach, with a special focus on the role of technology. In short: What is the art of mediated dialogue?
In this project, Nadja van der Weide explores how mediating conversations can be best designed and facilitated. Additionally, the project examines how digital technology can enhance this process.
Education
This project is part of a national pilot for the Professional Doctorate (PD), a new doctoral pathway in applied sciences. This initiative prepares highly qualified professionals to tackle complex real-world challenges. One of the candidates in this program is lecturer-researcher Nadja van der Weide, who, within the Arts + Creative domain, investigates ownership, technology, and engagement in designing dialogues within local communities.
’I hope for many thought-provoking, enriching, and inspiring dialogues in the coming years—conversations that will push forward my creative practice, the students I teach, the participatory art and design field, and the local communities involved in this exciting artistic and design research project.’

Researcher
Methodology
This research primarily employs the participatory design and dialogic art approaches. While these methods from art and design are powerful, they also raise critical questions about shaping technology-supported dialogues. The key research questions are:
- How can mediated dialogues be designed inclusively within dialogic art practices?
- How can shared ownership be fostered in the design of these conversations?
