Making Government Texts More Readable with AI
23 May 2024 - 31 August 2026

In this project, the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) collaborates with various partners, including municipalities, to explore whether and how AI can be responsibly used to simplify government communication and make it more aligned with citizens' experiences.
Duidelijke Taal Project
The Duidelijke Taal project investigates how AI can be applied responsibly to make government communication more accessible to citizens. In collaboration with municipalities, provinces, the National Archives, and universities of applied sciences, the project develops criteria for responsible AI. Based on these criteria, prototypes will be built and tested in real-world settings. The goal is to make bureaucratic texts more accessible and improve communication between the government and citizens.
Education
Students and faculty at HvA can contribute to the development and testing of AI prototypes, for example, through programs in communication, data science, or AI. The project offers interdisciplinary learning opportunities, where students work alongside industry partners to create concrete solutions for more accessible government communication.
Expected Outcomes
- AI Prototypes – Development of AI tools that simplify bureaucratic texts and better tailor them to citizens.
- Criteria for Responsible AI – Establishing guidelines for transparent, fair, and useful AI in government communication.
- Practice-Oriented Testing – Conducting real-world tests to refine and adapt prototypes to the needs of both citizens and government institutions.
- Applicable AI Tools – Creation of ready-to-use AI solutions for government agencies.
- Improved Government Communication – Contributing to more accessible and effective communication between governments and citizens.
