Functional Exercise Therapy
About the research group
A healthy lifestyle is not a given for everyone. People with physical complaints or limitations often need support to take control of their daily movement. The Functional Exercise Therapy research group contributes to the healthcare of the future by innovating professional practice and enhancing education for tomorrow's care professionals. The research group focuses on daily movement, with a particular emphasis on self-management in this area.
Interventions for vital movement
The Functional Exercise Therapy research group focuses on developing and evaluating interventions for vital movement, combined with lifestyle factors such as healthy nutrition and supported by creative and information technology. The primary focus is on interventions for prevention, cure, and care, catering to all age groups. The research line People in Motion plays a central role in this work. Researchers are part of an eight-year programme funded by an SIA SPRONG grant, integrating movement, nutrition, and technology.
Integration with education
The research group contributes to the Functional Exercise Therapy profile within the Interprofessional Paramedic Care (IPZ) programme. Its collaborations are inherently multidisciplinary, involving programmes such as Nutrition and Dietetics or the minor in Healthcare Technology. The research group provides various topics and challenges, offering students opportunities for internships and final projects.
Collaboration partners
The research group works closely with practice-based partners, including municipalities, neighbourhood initiatives, and educational institutions such as Utrecht University of Applied Sciences and Inholland. It also collaborates with the Amsterdam UMC university network, rehabilitation centres, and the Department of Human Movement Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit (VU). Making research projects applicable to real-world practice is a key goal, with much of the research conducted in local settings, such as living labs.
Utilising healthcare technology
The rising demand for healthcare and escalating costs are increasing pressure on our healthcare system. This trend calls for an approach that brings (movement) care closer to people’s daily lives. A vital part of this strategy is the use of accessible technology, such as mobile apps and online platforms, enabling healthcare professionals to support individuals in self-management and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
