Occupational Therapy - Participation and the Environment

About the research group

The Occupational Therapy – Participation and the Environment research group focuses on supporting individuals who face challenges in daily activities at home, school, work, or in their community. Particular attention is given to the influence of the environment. Our researchers examine the social, physical, cultural, and societal environments, identifying factors that affect participation and inclusion within one's surroundings. The research group explores ways in which environments can positively contribute to participation, perceived health, and well-being. Equality and justice are at the core of this mission.

Research Areas

The Occupational Therapy – Participation and the Environment research group conducts research in 3 main areas:

Technology and Participation

This research line explores how eHealth and technology can assist people in participating in daily life and society.

Diversity, Justice, and Participation

This area examines how society can become more inclusive and just, enabling more people to participate fully.

Children & Youth and Participation

This research focuses on supporting children and adolescents to engage in activities at home, school, and in their community.

Knowledge in Education

Lecturer-researchers from the research group teach students and co-develop the curricula for the Occupational Therapy and the European Master of Science in Occupational Therapy programmes. This ensures that knowledge from the Chair flows into education, while lecturer-researchers bring their teaching experience into their research projects. Students also contribute to research projects through (graduation) projects or master's theses.

Knowledge in Practice

The research group conducts research projects in collaboration with those directly affected, such as community residents, experts by experience, or healthcare professionals. This approach ensures that knowledge is directly applied and evaluated in practice. The research group also shares knowledge by co-organising study days, courses, and conferences.

Associate Professor of Technology and Participation

As an associate professor of Technology and Participation, Margriet Pol is affiliated with the Occupational Therapy – Participation and the Environment research group. She develops, evaluates, and implements technology that supports people's daily activities in their own environment and facilitates participation in society.
