Technology and Participation

About the research line

A key principle within this research line is participation and the role of the environment. This environment includes not only the home but also the social, societal and digital surroundings. Think of visiting the supermarket, community centre, library or GP, as well as logging in to hospital websites, pharmacies, and other online health and social care services.

Research focus: person-centred, co-creative and accessible

This research line places the individual at the centre. After all, everyone is an expert in their own life, with personal needs, preferences and capabilities. Associate Professor Margriet Pol conducts her research using a user-centred design approach, in close collaboration with the target group, their networks, healthcare professionals, students, engineers, and fellow researchers.

Inclusive technology

Technological innovations must match users’ health and digital skills. That’s why Margriet Pol focuses on inclusive technology: making technology accessible to all. She works with current and future health professionals, teaching them how to support people in using technology and eHealth in their daily lives. She also explores how professionals can integrate technology into their own practice.

Working together

Margriet Pol collaborates with partners in the field, such as the AUAS research group Digital Life, the Centre of Expertise Urban Vitality, the Smart Health and Vitality Lab, and the Amsterdam UMC’s University Network for Older Adults (UNO Amsterdam).

Designing and applying technology should always be done with input from both education and practice. For that reason, she also works with AUAS students from the Bachelor's and Master’s in Occupational Therapy and the minor in Healthcare Technology.
