Urban Interaction Design
The experience of the city is no longer just physical. Digital media are playing an increasingly important role. No one now leaves the house without a mobile phone, with the online world within reach. You can find the nicest restaurant by scanning the area on your screen and, while waiting at the bus station, you might share a post with your friends about how much fun the evening was. Digital developments have an increasing influence on how people move through the city and interact with each other in public spaces.
Do you want to learn to design beyond the boundaries of your own field? Would you like to work on a project in the city, for a real client? Then participate in the minor Urban Interaction Design.
Minor Urban IxD
In the minor Urban IxD you will design places in the city in which digital and physical experiences are interwoven. This requires a transdisciplinary approach, a way of working in which a design is created from multiple perspectives. You work in a team with students from different courses, absorb the knowledge and approach of your fellow students, and together you create new insights and concepts.
The minor starts with a series of bootcamps. Here you gain knowledge of psychology, learn methods from product design, urban planning and digital design. You also learn to critically question developments and design them based on public values. This way you have a common basis to get started. We then conduct field research in Amsterdam and during a city trip in another (European) city. During these weeks we observe how the different disciplines come together in practice. You then work on a design project in (and for) an Amsterdam neighborhood, in which sustainability, diversity and digitalization are important themes. You and your team will receive intensive guidance from various coaches, and there are inspiration sessions with designers from professional practice. You work towards an interactive prototype and an exhibition.
This minor is ideally suited for students from CMD, HBO-ict, CO/CB, AMFI, Product Design, Applied Psychology, and Built Environment. Please contact us if you would like to register from another study program!
