Studio Smart Cities

An innovative studio that challenges students and professionals to develop smart solutions for urban challenges.

What profiles does this studio offer?

  1. Cloud Engineer
  2. Embedded and Robotica Engineer
  3. Back-end Developer

The Smart Cities Studio is a unique learning environment where students and professionals collaborate on innovative solutions for urban challenges. Through an integrated approach, the development, implementation, and evaluation of technologies and concepts that contribute to the realization of smart, sustainable cities are addressed.

The studio covers a wide range of sub-themes, such as Smart Home, Smart Street, and Smart School. Each sub-theme offers a specific framework for research and development. For example, within Smart Home, projects focus on energy-efficient technologies and smart networks, while Smart Street is about optimizing mobility and traffic flows with IoT-based systems. Smart School focuses on designing innovative learning environments that combine technology and sustainability.

Students have the opportunity to work in multidisciplinary teams and use advanced digital tools such as data analysis, simulations, and prototyping. Partners from the public and private sectors are actively involved to bring practical challenges, enhancing the relevance and applicability of the projects.

The studio also offers a platform for experimentation and creativity, encouraging participants to develop groundbreaking solutions that contribute to inclusive, livable cities. The results of these projects not only provide valuable insights but can also be scaled up for real-world implementation.

Assignments

Development of IoT systems, data analysis, and designing smart infrastructure.

Examples

Energy-efficient Smart Buildings

Design a system for monitoring and controlling energy consumption in buildings. Use smart meters, automated lighting, and HVAC systems (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) to reduce energy consumption and improve sustainability.

Public Safety and Surveillance

Develop a smart surveillance system that uses AI and machine learning to detect unusual activities and improve public safety. Integrate this with existing urban infrastructure for real-time notifications to law enforcement.

Smart Public Transport

Design a system that optimizes routes and schedules of public transportation based on real-time data. Use GPS and IoT devices to provide accurate arrival times and improve the overall efficiency of public transport.

What makes this studio special?

The studio stands out due to its unique approach where technology and societal impact come together. Students and professionals have the opportunity to work on realistic and impactful projects within various sub-themes, such as Smart Home, Smart Street, and Smart School.

Each sub-theme presents specific challenges and opportunities to develop in-depth expertise. For example, a student may work on energy-efficient solutions for smart homes or innovative concepts for urban mobility management. Additionally, partners from various sectors are involved in the projects, which not only increases societal relevance but also ensures concrete applications in practice.

Through this multidisciplinary approach, participants are encouraged to think outside the box while strengthening their skills in technology, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Connection to 3D's

The studio integrates sustainability, diversity & inclusion, and digitalization by focusing projects on energy-efficient technologies, such as smart homes and streets that contribute to reducing CO2 emissions (sustainability). Diversity and inclusion are promoted by involving various stakeholders and communities in designing solutions, making projects relevant to a wide range of users. Digitalization is central through the use of IoT, data analysis, and advanced technologies to create innovative and scalable solutions.
