Financial requirements for a residence permit

You can expect several costs when applying for a residence permit for study in the Netherlands. Before AUAS Immigration Affairs can send in your application to the IND all financial requirements (see below) must be met. There are no additional costs. On this page, you can find the costs to match your situation.

Costs for Bachelor's or Master's students 

The amount you need to transfer to the AUAS consists of 3 parts:

  1. IND fee: You need to pay a fee for the Dutch Immigration Service. This fee is set at €235*
  2. Tuition fee: You need to pay the tuition fee for the first year in full. From the second year onwards you can pay in instalments. Please check the tuition fee page to see the correct tuition fee for your study.
  3. Proof of financial means for living expenses: You need to provide a (refundable) proof of financial means for living expenses payment of €1.225 for every month you will be studying in the Netherlands.** 
    - For one academic year/2 semesters: €14.700

Although the IND set this fee at €228, AUAS have set the standard at €235 to make sure that you meet the minimum required amount in case of banking costs or exchange rates. The amount of €235 is non-negotiable.
** Although the IND maintains an income standard of €1.217,96 for students, we have set the standard at €1.225 to make sure that you meet the minimum required amount in case of banking costs or exchange rates. The amount of €1.225 is non-negotiable.

Important info for Exchange VVR

Exchange students with the following nationalities: Australia / Canada / Japan / Monaco / New Zealand / South Korea / United Kingdom / United States of America / Vatican City State may also prove the proof of financial means for living expenses via a bank letter.

Costs for exchange students

  1. IND fee: You need to pay a fee for the Dutch Immigration Service. This fee is set at €235*
  2. Proof of financial means for living expenses: You need to provide a (refundable) proof of financial means for living expenses payment of €1.225 for every month you will be studying in the Netherlands.** 
    - For one semester: €7.350
    - For one academic year/2 semesters: €14.700

Costs for students who transfer to AUAS

If you are transferring to AUAS from a Dutch university:

** Although the IND maintains an income standard of €1.217,96 for students, we have set the standard at €1.225 to make sure that you meet the minimum required amount in case of banking costs or exchange rates. The amount of €1.225 is non-negotiable.

Costs for students that need to extend their resident permit

  • IND fee: You need to pay a fee for the Dutch Immigration Service. This fee is set at €235
  • Tuition fee: You need to proof that you have enough financial means to cover the tuition fee for the period you want to extend your residence permit (with a maximum of 12 months). If you already paid your tuition fee in full for this study year, you need to proof that you have enough financial means to cover the remaining months.
  • Proof of financial means: You need to show that you have enough financial means to cover your stay in the Netherlands for the duration you want to extend your residence permit (with a maximum of 12 months).     Please mind that you cannot pay your tuition fee from your proof of financial means for living expenses amount. These are two separate financial requirements. If you cannot fulfil these financial requirements, we cannot extend your residence permit.

Please note that you must cover all additional fees that the banks may charge for international bank transfers yourself.
