Jan-Willem van der Roest is professor in Sport Management & Sport Business. He conducts research into the ways in which sport organisations deal with societal developments in the field of business operations, athletic performance, and the well-being of people and the planet.

Jan-Willem obtained his PhD from Utrecht University in 2015 with a thesis on the commercialisation of sport clubs. He then worked at the Mulier Institute, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport and at the Utrecht University School of Governance. In recent years, he has conducted extensive research on the societal significance of (elite) sports. Jan-Willem published on the societal meaning of (elite) sport organisations in international scientific journals. Additionally, he is active in consultancy for various organizations, such as NOC*NSF, Eredivisie CV, Johan Cruyff Foundation, NLsportraad and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.

At the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Jan-Willem, together with the research group, undertakes advisory projects through the Benelux Sport Business Hub. With (faculty) researchers and students, the Benelux Sport Business Hub serves sports organisations with questions about management, leadership, and impact. The Benelux Sport Business Hub thus contributes to connecting research, education, and practice.
